Tradition of engagement rings and wedding rings: History provides us
interesting readings on engagement rings, wedding rings and their tradition!
Wearing of engagement rings and wedding rings has
been in practice for centuries. How did this tradition start? Historians
tell us that this tradition commenced with Romans. At the conclusion of the
engagement ceremony, the man placed a ring on the fourth finger of lady's
left hand. It was held that a nerve reaches the heart from the fourth finger
of the left hand of the lady!! The engagement rings were considered as
pledge that the wedding would take place on a future date. Engagement rings
and wedding rings usually form a part of the dowry that is agreed upon by
the bride's parents.
On
the day of the marriage, the wedding rings were placed by men as follows:
first on the top of left hand thumb while repeating the words 'in the name
of the father'. The man then places the ring on the second finger repeating
the words 'and of the son'. Then the middle finger repeating the words ' and
of the holy ghost'. Finally the wedding rings were placed by men on the
fourth finger of the lady and says 'Amen'. |
